F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and Museums

Definition

Marine heritage and conservation legacy of Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

The Cousteau Society is a marine conservation nonprofit founded by Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1973 (US incorporation), continuing the ocean exploration legacy built around his research ship Calypso, a converted minesweeper he acquired in 1950. Cousteau co-invented the Aqua-Lung demand regulator with Emile Gagnan in 1943 and produced the documentary The Silent World (1956). The Society funds marine research, education, and advocacy; Calypso, damaged in 1996, has been the subject of long restoration efforts. The organization preserves and promotes Cousteau’s films, data, and conservation positions.
