Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV)

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

Offshore wind crew boat.

A crew transfer vessel (CTV) is a small, fast catamaran or monohull that carries offshore-wind technicians from a nearby port to turbines for daily maintenance, typically 12 to 24 passengers at speeds around 25 to 30 knots. Transfer is direct: the CTV pushes its fendered bow against the turbine boat-landing while a technician steps across to the ladder, which works only in moderate seas, roughly up to 1.5 meter significant wave height. CTVs suit nearshore farms where crews return the same day. For distant or rougher sites the role shifts to a service operation vessel with a motion-compensated gangway and onboard accommodation.
