Cruise ship
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
Passenger cruise vessel.
A cruise ship is a passenger ship whose voyage is the holiday itself rather than transport between ports, designed around accommodation, dining, and entertainment for thousands of passengers and crew. As passenger ships under SOLAS, the largest carry over 5,000 passengers and are subject to the safe-return-to-port damage-stability and redundancy requirements of SOLAS Chapter II-1 for ships built after July 2010, the most demanding survivability standard in the merchant fleet. They are distinct from ferries, which carry passengers and vehicles on scheduled crossings.
