Definition

Custodian of the Roskilde Skuldelev finds.

Denmark’s principal cultural-history museum in Copenhagen, founded 1819, holding extensive Viking-age and prehistoric maritime material. While the five Skuldelev ships excavated from Roskilde Fjord in 1962 are conserved at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, the National Museum holds Bronze Age vessel finds, the Hjortspring boat (c. 350 BC, the oldest plank-built boat in Scandinavia), and rock-carving and ship-burial collections central to Nordic seafaring history.
