Port capable of receiving large draft vessels.
A deepwater port is a port with channel and berth depths sufficient to receive large, deep-draft vessels, typically Capesize bulkers, VLCC tankers, or the largest container ships, without tidal restriction. Required depth follows the design ship draft plus under-keel clearance, so handling a 16 m draft container ship calls for roughly 18 m of dredged or natural depth in the channel and turning basin. Many deepwater ports sit at naturally deep coasts or offshore to avoid the dredging cost of an inland site. Depth governs which ships call and sets the dredging and maintenance burden across the port’s life.
