Drayage
C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal tradeDefinition
Short haul road movement of containers.
Drayage is the short-haul road movement of containers, typically between a port or rail terminal and a nearby warehouse, depot, or inland point. It is the connective leg that links ocean and rail line-haul to the door, and a chronic congestion choke point: gate appointment systems, chassis availability, and detention free time all bear on drayage cost. Carrier haulage describes drayage arranged by the shipping line; merchant haulage describes drayage the cargo interest arranges itself.
