Former piracy HRA off Somalia, removed from BMP scope January 2023.
The standing High Risk Area off Somalia and East Africa, the zone within which BMP self-protection and war-risk premium triggers applied against Somali piracy from 2010. On 22 August 2022 the shipping industry round table (BIMCO, ICS, INTERTANKO, INTERCARGO, OCIMF) and military partners announced its removal effective 1 January 2023, after Somali pirate attacks fell to near zero. Removal ended the fixed boundary that had driven additional war-risk premium and mandatory hardening; UKMTO reporting and fusion-center threat awareness continued voluntarily.
