Definition

European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, an intergovernmental forecasting organization.

ECMWF, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, is an intergovernmental organization that produces global numerical weather forecasts and the ERA5 reanalysis, based in Reading and Bonn and supported by over 30 member and cooperating states. Its Integrated Forecasting System runs a coupled atmosphere-ocean-wave model with 4D-Var data assimilation and a 51-member ensemble, and is widely rated the most skillful global medium-range model for the 3 to 10 day range. ECMWF hosts two EU Copernicus services, the Climate Change Service (C3S) and Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), which deliver reanalysis, climate, and air-quality data used across ocean and weather forecasting.
