Eel barge

An eel barge is a well boat used to carry live eels in seawater, the hull pierced with holes so river or sea water flows through a central live-well compartment that acts as a floating aquarium. Dutch eel barges (palingaak) carried live eels from Friesland to London from roughly 1475 to 1938, holding 60,000 to 80,000 live eels per trip and mooring at a dedicated free berth on the Thames near Billingsgate, the Dutch Mooring. The preserved Korneliske Ykes II is a sailing replica of one. The type is the live-fish ancestor of the modern well boat now used to move farmed salmon.
