EM Multibeam
D2. Hydrography, tides, waves, bathymetry and marine geologyDefinition
Kongsberg multibeam echosounder family used in hydrography.
EM Multibeam is Kongsberg’s family of multibeam echosounders used across hydrographic and offshore survey work. The EM series spans shallow-water to full-ocean-depth models, including the EM 2040 for high-resolution shallow surveys and deep models reaching 11,000 m. Each system emits a fan of beams normal to the track and forms hundreds of depth soundings per ping, building swath bathymetry whose width scales with depth and beam angle. Roll, pitch, heave, yaw, and a sound-velocity profile are applied during beamforming. EM data supports IHO S-44 coverage and feature-detection requirements and feeds GEBCO and national chart production.
