FRAM filter

FRAM is a filter brand whose spin-on and cartridge oil and fuel elements were fitted historically on smaller marine diesels and auxiliary engines. A FRAM element is a pleated cellulose or synthetic-media filter that traps wear particles and combustion soot from the lubricating oil before it reaches the bearings, sized by an efficiency and capacity rating rather than an absolute micron cut. On larger marine engines, full-flow paper elements of this type are giving way to automatic backflushing filters and centrifuges, but FRAM-type spin-on filters remain common on generator sets and small craft.
