Free Flow Communications

Definition

Multi-band antenna combining services.

Free flow communications describes a multi-band or multi-orbit shipboard setup that combines several satellite services through one onboard router so traffic moves to whichever link is best at the moment. A typical arrangement bonds GEO VSAT (Ka or Ku) with LEO broadband and an L-band backup, switching automatically on outage or congestion. The router applies least-cost routing and QoS so crew welfare, navigation, and operational data each get an appropriate path. The aim is continuous connectivity by treating diverse satellite links as one pooled resource rather than isolated terminals.
