Freeboard deck

B1. Naval Architecture

Definition

Uppermost continuous deck per the Load Line Convention.

The freeboard deck is the uppermost continuous deck exposed to weather and sea, with permanent means of closing all openings below it, from which freeboard is measured down to the load line under ICLL 1966. It defines reserve buoyancy and bounds floodable-length and damage-stability calculations. Freeboard is the vertical distance from the load line to the freeboard deck at side, amidships.
