GFCM

The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) is the regional fisheries management organization for the Mediterranean and Black Sea, established under FAO Article XIV by an agreement that entered into force in 1952. It has binding management powers over shared demersal and small-pelagic stocks and red coral, sets total allowable catches and effort limits, declares fisheries restricted areas, and runs the regional plan against IUU fishing. Its scientific advice flows from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Fisheries. The GFCM adopted multiannual plans for stocks such as Adriatic small pelagics and western Mediterranean demersal trawl.
