Gibraltar Maritime Heritage

The naval and trading heritage of Gibraltar, a strategic port commanding the 8-nautical-mile-wide Strait of Gibraltar between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Holdings center on the Gibraltar National Museum (founded 1930), which interprets the Great Siege of 1779 to 1783, the Royal Navy dockyard, and the territory’s role at Trafalgar (1805), after which Nelson’s body was brought to Rosia Bay. The Gibraltar Maritime Administration today operates the ship registry under the British Red Ensign Group.
