GMDSS Operator Certificate

The GMDSS operator certificate qualifies a deck officer to work the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System radio equipment required by SOLAS Chapter IV. The General Operator’s Certificate is required on ships trading in all sea areas; the Restricted Operator’s Certificate covers sea area A1 only. The certificate is issued under the ITU Radio Regulations and recognized through STCW Regulation IV/2, and it supersedes the historic radio officer grade for distress and safety communications.
