Gross Earnings Surveys
F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and InstitutionsDefinition
ISWAN seafarer welfare surveys.
Gross-earnings surveys collect data on seafarers’ total pay, including basic wage, overtime, leave pay, and bonuses, to benchmark remuneration across ranks, ship types, and nationalities. They underpin wage negotiation and welfare research, feeding inputs into International Bargaining Forum bargaining and ITF minimum-wage comparisons. Welfare bodies and crewing managers use the results to assess whether crews on a given trade are paid at, above, or below the ITF benchmark and the Maritime Labour Convention’s wage expectations under MLC 2006 Title 2.
