Subglacial discharge to fjords.
Greenland subglacial melt refers to meltwater generated at and routed beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet that discharges at the grounding lines of marine-terminating glaciers into fjords. The discharge enters hundreds of meters below sea level and drives buoyant upwelling plumes that entrain warm ambient water, raising submarine melt at the ice front. Melt rate scales with subglacial discharge Q and ocean thermal forcing. The freshwater flux restratifies fjords, sustains winter circulation, and supplies nutrients that fuel productivity. The label GSM is not a standard glaciological acronym; the documented concept is subglacial discharge and plume-driven submarine melt, observed in West Greenland fjords including year-round winter discharge.
