Hamworthy Moss reliquefaction

B2. Marine Engineering

Definition

Reliquefaction plant for LNG carriers.

The Hamworthy Moss reliquefaction plant is an onboard system that liquefies cargo boil-off gas on LNG carriers and returns the LNG to the cargo tanks instead of burning it. Boil-off gas is drawn off by a two-stage centrifugal compressor, then condensed in a cryogenic cold box cooled by a closed nitrogen compression-expansion (Brayton) cycle, reliquefying roughly 70% of the boil-off while the balance can feed the engines. Now part of Wartsila Gas Solutions after the Hamworthy acquisition, it held the exclusive license for the Moss RS reliquefaction system, with more than 75 plants in the LNG fleet.
