High-Value Asset (HVA)

E2. Naval, defence and maritime law enforcement

Definition

Protected ship within a formation.

A high-value asset (HVA), or high-value unit (HVU), is a ship whose loss would gravely impair an operation and which therefore receives dedicated protection within a formation. Typical HVAs are aircraft carriers, amphibious ships, replenishment oilers, and command ships; escorts such as guided-missile destroyers and frigates screen them in a defended layered ring against air, surface, and subsurface threats. HVA defense (HVAA in the air-defense context) drives screen geometry, sensor coverage, and the assignment of an area air defense commander.
