HS code

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

Harmonized System tariff classification.

An HS code is a commodity classification number under the Harmonized System maintained by the World Customs Organization, used by over 200 economies to assess duty, compile trade statistics, and apply controls. The first six digits are internationally fixed; countries append further digits for their own tariff and statistical needs. The WCO revises the nomenclature roughly every five years, and the 2022 edition added headings for e-waste and dual-use goods. Misclassification drives most customs valuation and duty disputes.
