Hugin AUV

D2. Hydrography, tides, waves, bathymetry and marine geology

Definition

Kongsberg autonomous underwater vehicle used in survey work.

The HUGIN AUV is Kongsberg’s autonomous underwater vehicle for deep-water survey, run untethered on a pre-programmed mission and navigated by aided inertial navigation. The HUGIN Superior is rated to 6,000 m and carries the HISAS interferometric synthetic aperture sonar plus an EM 2040 multibeam, producing about 5 cm by 5 cm SAS imagery and a 1,000 m swath at low speed. Operating close to the seabed, it resolves fine bathymetry and targets that surface vessels cannot, used for pipeline inspection, search, and high-resolution mapping. Endurance models extend mission time well past 100 hours.
