IACS Common Structural Rules

B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and Recycling

Definition

Harmonized rules for bulkers/tankers.

The IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR) are a single set of hull-strength rules that all IACS members apply to bulk carriers and oil tankers, replacing the divergent rules each society once used. The harmonized CSR for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers entered into force on 1 July 2015 and merged the earlier separate CSR-BC and CSR-OT into one rule set. They apply to bulk carriers of 90 m and above and double-hull oil tankers of 150 m and above contracted on or after that date. The CSR combine prescriptive scantling formulas with direct finite element strength analysis, fatigue assessment, and net-scantling corrosion deductions, and they satisfy the IMO Goal-Based Standards.
