IICL

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

Institute of International Container Lessors.

IICL is the Institute of International Container Lessors, the trade body of the major container-leasing companies, best known for its inspection and repair criteria that govern container condition at interchange. The IICL Guide for Container Equipment Inspection sets damage tolerances and repair triggers used in on-hire, off-hire, and in-service surveys: which dents, cuts, and corrosion need repair and which do not. IICL-6 replaced IICL-5 and the Common Interchange Criteria on 1 August 2016, harmonizing the criteria worldwide. The standard runs tighter than cargo-worthy (CW): a 35 mm side-panel dent limit is typical. Lessors bill repairs against the IICL criteria at off-hire.
