Definition

International Ocean Discovery Program for scientific ocean drilling.

IODP is the International Ocean Discovery Program, the multinational scientific ocean-drilling program that ran from 2013, succeeding the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program of 2003 to 2013 (which shared the IODP acronym). Its lineage starts with the Deep Sea Drilling Project of 1968 to 1983 and the Ocean Drilling Program of 1985 to 2003. The program drills and cores the seabed from platforms such as the JOIDES Resolution and the riser vessel Chikyu to study climate history, the deep biosphere, plate-boundary earthquakes, and the structure of the crust. Recovered cores are curated at international repositories for open scientific access.
