Jumboised tanker

A jumboized tanker is an existing tanker lengthened by cutting the hull amidships and welding in a prefabricated mid-body section, raising cargo capacity without building a new ship. The added parallel mid-body lifts deadweight and cubic capacity while keeping the original bow, stern, machinery, and accommodation, so the owner pays for steel and yard time rather than a full newbuilding. Jumboization works because a tanker’s parallel mid-body is a simple box, cheap to fabricate and insert. The same method, also called jumboizing, has been applied to bulk carriers, container ships, and ferries, and was common when freight rates favored capacity over fleet renewal.
