Jury Rig

A jury rig is an improvised, temporary rig assembled from salvaged or makeshift materials to keep a vessel propelled or steerable after dismasting or damage. A jury mast might be a boom, spinnaker pole, or stub of the broken spar stepped and stayed with available cordage to carry a reduced sail; a jury rudder is fashioned from a spar, locker door, or floorboards. The aim is not performance but reaching port or sea room; the term carries no implication of the legal word jury and predates it in nautical use.
