Jutes

The Jutes were a Germanic seafaring people of the migration period, placed by Bede in his Ecclesiastical History (731) as one of the three peoples, with the Angles and Saxons, who settled Britain in the fifth century. Bede locates their continental homeland in Jutland and records their settlement of Kent and the Isle of Wight; tradition names the leaders Hengist and Horsa, traditionally dated to 449. They crossed the North Sea in clinker-built rowed and sailed craft of the type represented by the Nydam and Sutton Hoo finds.
