KCS (KRISO Container Ship)

The KCS (KRISO Container Ship) is a 3,600 TEU container-hull design released by the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering as an open benchmark for ship hydrodynamics. It is not a vessel in service; it is a reference hull with published model-test data used to validate resistance, propeller open-water, and self-propulsion predictions. The KCS was a standard test case at the Gothenburg CFD workshops (2000 and 2010) and the ITTC, paired with the KVLCC2 tanker hull. Researchers compare RANS-CFD output against the towing-tank measurements, where good codes reproduce total resistance to within about 2 percent. Any CFD paper on container-hull resistance or wake almost certainly cites the KCS.
