Keel block layout

The keel block layout is the arrangement of keel blocks and bilge (side) blocks on a dry-dock or building-dock floor that supports the ship during docking. Blocks are positioned under the keel and at strong points (bulkheads, web frames, engine seats) so the docking reactions do not overstress unsupported bottom plating, and they are kept clear of sea chests, the propeller, and shell openings. The docking plan, prepared by the yard from the ship’s docking drawing, gives block spacing, height, and capping material. Loads concentrate as the ship sets down and the water leaves, with the after end taking the first contact, so block strength and the bottom structure above each block are both checked.
