Klepper Folding Kayak
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Traditional German folding sea kayak.
The Klepper folding kayak is a German collapsible sea kayak with a wood frame and a fabric skin over inflatable air sponsons. Tailor Johann Klepper (1868 to 1949) of Rosenheim, Bavaria, acquired the rights to Alfred Heurich’s Delphin folding-boat design and began production in 1907; the firm Klepper Faltbootwerft was formed in 1919. The Aerius double has been made largely unchanged since 1954. Kleppers swept the folding-kayak events at the 1936 Olympics and crossed the Atlantic by paddle, prized for packability and seaworthiness.
