Kockums system

The Kockums system refers to the covered, conveyor-style series-production method developed by the Swedish yard Kockums at its Arendal facility in the 1960s, building large tankers indoors in a fixed flow of stations rather than on an open building berth. Blocks moved through enclosed bays where panels, sub-blocks, and grand blocks were built and outfitted under cover, weather-independent and laid out like an assembly line for repeat hull designs. The approach influenced later high-throughput yard layouts. Kockums itself is a real shipyard (now part of Saab Kockums, building submarines and surface combatants); the named indoor-series concept is historical and not a single proprietary specification.
