Kronan, Swedish Warship

F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and Museums

Definition

Sunk 1676, partially excavated since 1980.

Kronan was a Swedish first-rate warship of 126 guns that capsized and exploded during a battle against a Danish-Dutch fleet off Oland on 1 June 1676, sinking with over 800 men. One of the largest ships of its day, she lay forgotten until located in 1980, and ongoing excavation has recovered guns, coins, instruments, and personal effects that document late seventeenth-century naval life. The finds are displayed at the Kalmar County Museum and complement Vasa as evidence of Sweden’s age as a Baltic great power.
