Kursk Disaster

The loss of the Russian Navy submarine K-141 Kursk, an Oscar-II class (Project 949A) cruise-missile boat, in the Barents Sea on 12 August 2000 during the Northern Fleet exercise. A practice torpedo’s leaking HTP propellant detonated, and a second, larger explosion of warhead torpedoes about two minutes later tore open the bow. All 118 crew died; 23 survived in the stern compartment for some hours before the inrush. A Norwegian-led dive team reached the hull on 21 August. This is post-war, not a WWI or WWII event.
