Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET)

A Law Enforcement Detachment, or LEDET, is a US Coast Guard team embarked aboard a US Navy or allied warship to provide the law-enforcement authority that the navy ship lacks. Posse Comitatus and the military’s limited domestic policing role mean a Navy crew cannot conduct law-enforcement boardings; a Coast Guard LEDET, exercising Title 14 authority, conducts the boarding, search, arrest, and seizure for drug interdiction, fisheries, and migrant cases. The model lets naval platforms execute counter-narcotics operations under valid law-enforcement authority.
