Lightship
B1. Naval ArchitectureDefinition
Vessel mass excluding cargo, fuels, water, stores, and persons.
Lightship (or lightweight) is the mass of the ship complete and ready for service but empty of cargo, fuel, water, stores, and persons: the steel structure, machinery, and permanent outfit. It is established at delivery by an inclining experiment and a lightship survey, and it fixes the baseline from which deadweight is measured. Lightship and its vertical center (KG) anchor every subsequent loading-condition stability check.
