Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT)
A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codesDefinition
Required under SOLAS V/19-1.
Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) is the satellite reporting system that transmits a ship’s identity and position to flag, port, and coastal states beyond AIS range. SOLAS V/19-1 makes it mandatory, added by resolution MSC.202(81) (adopted 19 May 2006), in force 1 January 2008. It applies to passenger ships, cargo ships of 300 gross tonnage and upwards, and mobile offshore drilling units on international voyages. Ships report position at least every six hours to a national or regional data center. LRIT is distinct from AIS: it is a closed, access-controlled reporting chain serving security and SAR, not a broadcast.
