Definition

1900 novel by Joseph Conrad.

Lord Jim is Joseph Conrad’s 1900 novel, first serialized in Blackwood’s Magazine in 1899 and 1900. A young first mate abandons the pilgrim ship Patna, believing it is sinking; it does not, and the resulting inquiry strips his certificate and his honor. Jim seeks redemption in the Malay settlement of Patusan. Narrated largely by Conrad’s recurring figure Marlow, the book examines guilt, the seaman’s code, and self-judgment, and ranks among the central works of serious maritime fiction.
