Malacca Strait Patrols (MSP)

E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and risk

Definition

Trilateral coordinated patrols by IDN, MYS, SGP, THA.

The Malacca Strait Patrols are a cooperative security arrangement by Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and (from 2008) Thailand to suppress piracy and armed robbery in the Strait of Malacca and Singapore Strait. Launched in 2004 to 2006, MSP combines coordinated naval sea patrols (MALSINDO), the Eyes-in-the-Sky combined maritime air patrols, and an Intelligence Exchange Group. The framework, formalized under MSP Terms of Reference in 2006, cut attacks sharply in the world’s busiest chokepoint and is cited as a model of littoral-state cooperation alongside the ReCAAP information-sharing center.
