Marina

C4. Ports, terminals and coastal/marine civil engineering

Definition

Recreational craft basin.

A marina is a sheltered basin for berthing recreational craft such as yachts and motorboats, served by floating or fixed pontoons, finger berths, fuel, water, and shore power. Sheltering from waves usually needs a breakwater or close pontoon attenuator holding significant wave height inside to roughly 0.3 m for comfort and safety. Berth length, finger spacing, and fairway width follow the design craft length overall, so a fairway is typically 1.5 to 2.0 times the longest boat beam for maneuvering. Marinas are judged on berth count, occupancy, and access at all tide states, not cargo throughput.
