Maritime Cyber Security Awareness Training

E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and risk

Definition

STCW-aligned training pursuant to MSC.428(98).

Maritime cyber security awareness training teaches seafarers and shore staff to recognize and respond to cyber threats: spotting phishing, handling removable media, using strong credentials, and following incident-reporting procedures. IMO Resolution MSC.428(98) requires cyber risk to be managed within the ISM Code safety management system, and the supporting IMO MSC-FAL.1/Circ.3 guidelines treat training and awareness as a core element, since most reported incidents start with human error. The IMO model course and BIMCO guidelines align this with the STCW competence framework so cyber awareness sits beside other mandatory crew training.
