Maximum Economic Yield (MEY)

D4. Fisheries, aquaculture, blue economy and marine resources

Definition

Catch level maximizing resource rent.

Maximum economic yield is the catch level that maximizes the resource rent, the difference between total revenue and total cost of fishing, rather than the tonnage landed. Because fishing costs rise as effort climbs, MEY almost always sits at a lower fishing mortality and higher stock biomass than MSY, so managing to MEY is both more profitable and more conservative. Australia’s Commonwealth fisheries adopted MEY as the explicit harvest-strategy target in 2007.
