Mediterranean Cruising

F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and Sport

Definition

Popular leisure sailing area.

Mediterranean cruising is recreational sailing in the Mediterranean Sea, a near-tideless basin with short, steep wind-seas and reliable summer breezes such as the Aegean meltemi and the Adriatic bora. Passages hop between harbors and anchorages across grounds like the Greek islands, the Croatian coast, the Balearics, and the Cote d’Azur. Berthing is usually stern-to (Med mooring) on a lazy line or the boat’s own anchor, since marina space is tight. The sailing season runs spring to autumn, and charter fleets are concentrated in hubs like Athens, Split, and Palma.
