Mitsubishi UEC

B2. Marine Engineering

Definition

Two-stroke engine family licensed from Mitsubishi.

The Mitsubishi UEC is a family of two-stroke, low-speed, crosshead marine diesel engines designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, now under Mitsui E&S and the wider Japanese two-stroke industry. UEC stands for Universal Engine Crosshead. The series spans bores from roughly 330 to 850 mm with uniflow scavenging and is offered in mechanically controlled and electronic (Eco) variants, the electronic ones giving variable injection and exhaust timing for better part-load consumption. Mitsubishi is also a licensed builder of MAN B&W and WinGD two-stroke designs, but the UEC is its own engine line, paired with Mitsubishi MET turbochargers, and meets NOx Tier II under MARPOL Annex VI Reg 13.
