Definition

Legal basis for eBL recognition.

The UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records (MLETR) is a model legislative text adopted by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law on 13 July 2017 to give electronic transferable records (electronic bills of lading, bills of exchange, promissory notes, warehouse receipts) the same legal effect as paper. It applies the principles of functional equivalence and technology neutrality: an electronic record qualifies if a reliable method ensures singularity, integrity, and exclusive control. Jurisdictions enacting it include the UK (Electronic Trade Documents Act 2023), Singapore, and Bahrain.
