Nautical Publications
A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codesDefinition
Required to be up to date under SOLAS V/27.
Nautical publications are the official documents a ship needs to plan and conduct a safe passage: sailing directions, lists of lights, tide tables, notices to mariners, and similar references. SOLAS V/27 requires nautical charts and nautical publications to be adequate and up to date for the intended voyage. The carriage list itself sits in V/19. Corrections come from weekly Notices to Mariners and radio navigational warnings. ECDIS systems satisfy the chart requirement when fed type-approved ENCs kept current; paper publications still apply where electronic equivalents are not carried. Port state control checks currency as a detainable item.
