Naval Special Warfare (NSW)

The maritime special operations component of the US Navy, organized under Naval Special Warfare Command (WARCOM, established 1987) at Coronado, comprising the SEAL (Sea, Air, Land) teams and Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen (SWCC) who operate the insertion craft. NSW conducts direct action, special reconnaissance, counterterrorism, and underwater operations, deploying via submarine, surface craft, or air. The British equivalent is the Special Boat Service (SBS). NSW forces are a component of US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) when assigned, separate from the conventional amphibious landing force.
