Net tonnage (NT)
B1. Naval ArchitectureDefinition
Volumetric earning-capacity tonnage per ITC 1969.
Net tonnage (NT) is the dimensionless earning-capacity tonnage under ITC 1969, derived from the molded volume of cargo spaces with a draft-dependent multiplier and a passenger term, and floored at $0.30 \cdot GT$. It represents the useful revenue space rather than total volume, so it sits below GT. NT feeds canal and port charges (the Suez and Panama canals issue their own special tonnage certificates on the same principle).
