UV-based ballast treatment system.
The Optimarin Ballast System is a UV-based ballast water treatment system from the Norwegian maker Optimarin, using filtration plus medium-pressure UV irradiation with no added chemicals. Filtration removes larger organisms and sediment on uptake, then high-dose UV inactivates the remaining organisms, viruses, and bacteria, treating again on discharge as needed. It meets the IMO BWM Convention D-2 standard and was the first system to gain US Coast Guard type approval, in 2016, which cut the required holding time. Being a non-active treatment, it carries IMO type approval without the more onerous basic and final active-substance review.
