Oseberg Ship
F1. Maritime HistoryDefinition
Viking burial vessel found in Norway in 1904.
The Oseberg ship is a Viking clinker-built oak vessel of about 820 CE, excavated in 1904 from a burial mound at Oseberg in Vestfold, Norway. Used as the grave of two high-status women, it preserved an exceptional collection of carved woodwork, textiles, a wagon, and sledges, making it one of the richest finds of the Viking Age. The elaborately decorated ship was likely a coastal vessel rather than an ocean-goer. It is conserved and displayed in Oslo alongside the Gokstad and Tune ships.
